Scroll through the news in 2026 and you may see two apparently contradictory headlines: a major company announcing job cuts while continuing to advertise new positions. For students and fresh graduates, this can feel confusing. If businesses are reducing their workforces, why are they still hiring?
The reason is that many companies are not simply becoming smaller. They are changing the type of talent they need. Routine work is increasingly being supported by automation and artificial intelligence, while roles requiring technical knowledge, sound judgement, communication and digital confidence are becoming more valuable.
For graduates, this does not mean opportunities are disappearing completely. It means employers are placing greater value on different skills.
When a company announces layoffs, it may be reorganising specific departments rather than stopping recruitment across the entire business. Teams may be merged, repetitive processes automated and investment redirected towards areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure, engineering and data analytics.
This explains why a company can reduce jobs in one division while creating new roles in another. It may need fewer employees to maintain older systems but more professionals who can develop and manage newer technology.
Thomson Reuters, for example, announced reductions in some engineering roles in July 2026 while also stating that it expected to create more than 250 net-new engineering positions globally over the following two years. Many of those roles were expected to focus on senior engineering and AI-related capabilities.
Microsoft also announced thousands of job cuts during a broader restructuring while continuing to invest heavily in AI infrastructure and product development. These examples show that a reduction in one department does not necessarily reflect a company’s overall demand for talent.
The main lesson for graduates is that a hiring freeze or layoff announcement rarely tells the full story. Job seekers need to look at which departments are shrinking and which areas are receiving fresh investment.
Roles built around predictable and repetitive tasks are usually more exposed to automation. Basic data entry, standard report preparation, simple customer enquiries, manual document checking and repetitive administrative work can now be completed faster with digital tools.
This does not always mean an entire occupation will disappear. More often, one employee using automation may be able to complete work that previously required several people. Companies may then redesign the position to include more analytical, technical or judgement-based responsibilities.
A 2026 Swiss employment study examining millions of job advertisements found fewer junior opportunities in several AI-exposed fields, including marketing, administration, finance and information technology. Demand remained stronger in healthcare, construction and skilled trades, where practical work and human presence are more difficult to replace.
Although this research was not based on the Australian market, it reflects a wider international trend. Students should not avoid qualifications or abandon their chosen careers. Instead, they should understand which parts of their field are becoming automated and which capabilities are becoming more valuable.
A skilled candidate does not need ten years of experience. Employers often consider graduates job-ready when they can demonstrate relevant knowledge, practical ability and a willingness to learn.
In 2026, employers are increasingly looking for candidates who can use digital tools confidently, understand basic AI applications, analyse information, communicate clearly and solve problems with limited supervision. They also want people who can review AI-generated information rather than accepting it without checking.
Human capabilities remain important. Judgement, creativity, empathy, teamwork and decision-making are difficult to automate completely. A graduate who understands technology and can work effectively with people may be more valuable than someone trained to complete only one narrow task.
Students should therefore focus on building a combination of technical and human skills rather than relying only on their qualification.
Many students assume AI knowledge is only relevant to software developers or IT specialists. In reality, AI-supported tools are now used across human resources, accounting, marketing, customer service, healthcare administration, education, logistics, legal services, retail and manufacturing.
An HR assistant may use software to organise applications. A marketing graduate may use AI to research customer behaviour. An accountant may work with systems that flag unusual transactions. These employees do not need to become AI engineers, but they should understand how technology is used within their profession.
Employers also need people who understand the limitations of these tools. Candidates should be able to check accuracy, protect confidential information, identify errors and recognise when a human decision is required.
Students should not wait until graduation to begin preparing for employment. A useful starting point is to read job advertisements regularly within their chosen industry. This helps identify the tools, qualifications and capabilities employers repeatedly request.
Instead of trying to learn everything at once, students should select two or three relevant skills to develop. A business student may focus on Excel, data presentation and AI-assisted research. A marketing student may prioritise analytics, content planning and customer research. An IT student may strengthen skills in cloud computing, cybersecurity or machine learning.

The experience does not need to come from a multinational company. What matters is whether the student can explain the task, the action they took and the result they achieved.
Simply listing “communication skills” or “AI knowledge” on a resume is rarely enough. Employers want evidence.
Instead of writing “good communication skills,” a stronger statement would be: “Presented weekly project updates to a five-member university team and helped deliver the assignment ahead of schedule.”
Instead of writing “knowledge of AI tools,” a stronger statement would be: “Used AI-assisted research tools to compare customer trends and reviewed all findings for accuracy before preparing the final report.”
These examples show how the candidate applied the skill in a real situation. Students can use university projects, casual employment, internships, volunteering and personal projects as evidence.
Resumes should also be adjusted for each application. Relevant skills and keywords from the job advertisement should appear naturally in the document, particularly when employers use applicant tracking systems. Candidates should only include abilities and experience they genuinely possess.
Large job-cut announcements can make the employment market appear worse than it is. However, a company may reduce traditional roles while hiring in AI, cybersecurity, engineering, data, sales, compliance or customer strategy.
Rather than reacting to the headline alone, job seekers should examine which departments are affected, which areas are receiving investment and what skills appear in current vacancies. They should also consider whether jobs are being removed completely or redesigned to include new responsibilities.
Not every industry is affected equally. Healthcare, construction and skilled trades still depend heavily on practical ability, physical presence and human interaction. These areas may face different challenges from office-based roles that contain more repetitive digital tasks.
Companies should also be careful not to remove too many junior positions. Senior professionals usually build their expertise by progressing through entry-level and mid-level roles. If businesses stop hiring graduates, they may create future leadership and skill shortages.
A better approach is to redesign graduate roles. Junior employees can learn to work with AI systems, review automated results, support complex projects and gradually take responsibility for important decisions.
This allows businesses to improve productivity while continuing to develop their future workforce.
Companies are cutting some jobs because technology, customer expectations and business priorities are changing. At the same time, they continue to hire people who can support new systems, solve difficult problems and work confidently with digital tools.
For students and job seekers, the best response is not panic. It is to remain informed, develop relevant skills and learn how to demonstrate those skills through practical evidence.
Qualifications can help graduates enter the job market, but adaptability, communication, digital confidence, practical experience and sound judgement will help them remain valuable as the workplace continues to evolve.
